What model Shrike did you choose?
Shrike-R, with the freeboard reduced by 40 mm from Shrike, rather than the 60mm of the Shrike-R, so it’s a Shrike R40. The kayak will be used as a rolling and play boat.
What modifications, if any, did you make to the design described in the Build Manual?
I increased the cockpit length by 5 cm, which now makes it the same size as my Tahe Greenland’s cockpit. All my spray skirts and my Tuiliq can be used on either kayak. I did not construct Maroske deck fittings. I did it a little differently . What I used was garden reticulation
(irrigation) fittings and I found it very easy to do. Almost the same, but not as difficult. As the kayak was going to take a lot use on the keel I put on a Keel Eazy strip from Reed, this should save the keel from a lot of wear. I did the cockpit rim in a “bread and butter” format then glassed it on the inside.
What is the weight of the finished kayak?
14 kg. The paint added a few pounds to it but in the end it was worth it
Any tips you’d like to suggest to future builders?
Just follow the Build Manual in the download.It’s very clear and simple to follow. The kayak was not difficult to make and I would say to other paddlers, “have a go”.
How does the kayak perform on the water?
Like a dream! She looks great and paddles even better. Off the wind she fly’s as she is only 14 Kgs and with the deep vee it is so easy to hold a straight line. I would like to thank Chris and Nick for a great design and for the plans.
