What model Shrike did you choose?
This is the prototype Shrike, with the keyhole cockpit
What modifications, if any, did you make to the design described in the Build Manual?
None.
What is the weight of the finished kayak?
32 pounds (14.5 kg)
Anything you wish you had done differently?
I should have concentrated more on constructing efficient knee braces by narrowing the front part of the keyhole cockpit. This discussed in detail under the Builders’ Tips tab.
I now wish I had aimed for a clear finish, rather than paint. I had drawn various lines on the hull and deck while working out the design, and these would have shown through a clear finish. I just think that the later Shrikes with clear finish look spectacular.
I’ve now amended the Build Manual to show slightly wider sheer clamps so the deck fittings are more secure, and I’ve reduced the diameter of the washers on the deck fittings. The original washers could scrape against a kayak when rafted up
Any tips you’d like to suggest to future builders?
Plenty, but I’ve incorporated them into the Build Manual.
How does the kayak perform on the water?
As one would expect, just like a West Greenland hard chine kayak, with excellent handling and maneuverability. I’m finding that the kayak rolls more easily with a screw roll than my usual C-to-C roll. This may be due to my incompetence.
