Christopher Crowhurst – Shrike R

What model Shrike did you choose?
This was the prototype for the rolling hybrid, based on the standard Shrike Hull and Shrike-Too masik.

What modifications, if any, did you make to the design described in the Build Manual?
These are documented now in the Shrike-R build options included in the download.

What is the weight of the finished kayak?
23lbs, this kayak was deliberately built very light with minimal fiberglass. It is specifically for rolling training.

Anything you wish you had done differently?
Slow down and enjoy the build. I was completing it in a hurry for a Greenland camp rolling demo.

Any tips you’d like to suggest to future builders?
Polyurethane made the kayak look even more beautiful than the previously epoxied hulls.

How does the kayak perform on the water?
She has the same underwater profile as the Shrike and Shrike-Too so she paddles and turns very similarly to those kayaks. She does roll extremely easily and can balance brace like a dream. Here is a link to an article on the motivations behind the modifications.
