What model Shrike did you choose?
Shrike
What modifications, if any, did you make to the design described in the Build Manual?
Added 20 mm to freeboard
Lowered the masik to 11.5″
manufactured all (8) Maroske fittings with a 3d printer
enlarged the ocean cockpit by about 25 mm in width & length
changed the angle of the compression fitting on the skeg box
Glued two 15 x 40 mm battens over the bulkheads where I sit during entry & exit to cockpit to decrease the possible flex
What is the weight of the finished kayak?
18.8 kg approx.
Any tips you’d like to suggest to future builders?
for a clear finish work as meticulously as possible
use the angle measuring jig for best fit of the deck panels onto the sheer clamps
practice applying glass cloth and epoxy before attempting anything on the actual surfaces
How does the kayak perform on the water?
This is my first West Greenland kayak with a deep V hull so I felt unstable as I started to get away from the shore on a calm day with no wind when I first launched the kayak.
I hope to overcome this feeling as I make progress and use the advantages of this wonderful kayak especially in high winds & rough sea.
I can only compare Shrike with some polyethylene kayaks which I have previously used in recent years and I’m sure it is far superior to anything I’ve used before.
